Q: How long will I be a "Pledge"?
A: Pledging is a process that can range from five to six weeks depending on the chapter. During that time, we ask that our potential new members familiarize themselves with out history, codes of conduct, and traditions. Most importantly, the pledging period is the time when you will get to know your future brothers. Our Pledges are involved in all of our fraternity's activities — from social events to philanthropy activities to annual alumni banquets. The more actively you participate, the better your experience, as a Pledge of Phi Kappa Pi will be.

Q: Do you guys party all the time?
A: We have all seen Animal House. We all have a stereotype in mind of what fraternities do: they drink excessively, party all night, and become the bane of their respective university. At Phi Kappa Pi this is simply NOT TRUE.

Phi Kap social events require organization, planning and hard work on the part of many Brothers. A successful party is a testament to our ability to function as a group and our ability to create a safe atmosphere where we all can enjoy ourselves. To that end, we all follow strict guidelines which are designed to allow everyone to have fun.

Parties and internal activities aside, Phi Kaps are involved in many joint and individual ventures, both on campus and within the community. Orientation Week, charitable fundraisers, food drives, working with disadvantaged children, inter-Greek activities — these are just a few of the items on a typical Phi Kap resume. We are always eager to get involved.

Q: Will the fraternity take up a lot of my time?
A: Time management means something different when you get to university than it did in high school. You now have so much available time on your hands that you can either use it or waste it. We do ask that our potential new members commit time and effort to our fraternity — as with any organization, you will only get out of it what you put into it. However, we will never ask that you put the fraternity ahead of your studies. Phi Kappa Pi strives to instill responsibility in all of its Brothers. That responsibility begins in the classroom.

Q: My parents don't want me to join a fraternity. What if I just didn't tell them?
A: Many parents will cringe at the mention of joining a "fraternity". This reaction stems from the stereotypes that follow many fraternities and other social organizations: beer, women, parties, hazing, pranks, etc. The best way to put your parents' fears to rest is to be honest and open with them. Tell them a bit about our history and our many social activities. Invite them to talk to our Brothers — we would be happy to speak frankly with them on any subject. Phi Kappa Pi is an extended family that includes the families of all of our members. Some of our most rewarding relationships have been with the parents of our Brothers.

Q: How much does it cost to join?
A: Our annual dues are used to fund our many internal and social activities, including Wine & Cheeses, Christmas Dinners, and Annual Weekends. To this end, every dime can be accounted for. Unlike other fraternities, we do not ask our New Brothers to contribute funds to some international organization or trust fund. You will be surprised at how little you will have to contribute financially to Phi Kappa Pi and how much you will get in return.

Q: What intramural sports do you do?
A: Any and all. Our sports teams are open to all Brothers and Pledges alike, regardless of skill. With such diversity in our ranks, we can almost guarantee that there will always be at least one Phi Kap ready and willing to participate in any sport you want.

Q: My dad is an Alumni of Phi Kapppa Pi. Do you honor legacies?
A: A quick glance at our membership will reveal many "legacies" in our fraternity — Grandfathers to Fathers, Fathers to Sons. However, it is important to remember that each Brother of Phi Kappa Pi joins on his own merits. Whom you are related to (or even friends with) is not important. It's who you are as a person that counts.

Q: I am worried about my grades. What can your chapter do to help me in school?
A: Our Brothers come from a wide variety of faculties. Chances are that you will find at least one Brother in a given chapter that will have already taken a class in which you are currently enrolled. We can provide invaluable academic assistance and experience to Pledges and New Brothers seeking help. As well, we can teach you time management skills — an ability that will benefit you long into the future.

Q: Do you get a lot of support from alumni?
A: Part of belonging to Phi Kappa Pi means continued support even after your undergraduate years are over. We publish alumni newsletters, maintain an alumni database, hold alumni events, and use alumni contacts to help graduating Brothers obtain job interviews. Our Alumni lead by example, provide valuable and needed assistance in all areas, including financial, and most importantly, show us that Phi Kappa Pi is not just for the undergraduate… it's for life!

Q: Do you haze? What is involved in your initiation process?
A: HAZING ABSOLUTELY NOT! Phi Kappa Pi Brothers are proud, respectable men that do not demean themselves with adolescent displays. Nothing is learned through hazing and nothing is gained. As a Pledge, you will be exposed to many time honored Phi Kappa Pi traditions and will often be invited to participate. Under no circumstances will you ever be forced or coerced into doing something you do not want to do. Trust and respect are two very important principles in a Phi Kappa Pi chapter house. You will know this the minute you step through our doors.
